What is Transpersonal Psychology?
Transpersonal psychology was developed from earlier branches of psychology including psychodynamic theory, behaviourism, humanism, existential-phenomenological perspectives, and cognitive theory. It also incorporates spiritual dimensions of existence in the scientific study of human beings. Mind, spirituality, and higher states of consciousness are the main focus of transpersonal psychology. Within this context, spirituality refers to a universal dimension that is both transcendent and immanent. Newer fields of psychology, especially transpersonal psychology, and ecopsychology, consider the holistic notion of human beings as comprising the mind, body, and soul. Transpersonal literally means beyond the personal and beyond the ego. Transpersonal psychology focuses on the body-mind connection and non-ordinary states of consciousness.
