Emotion Focused Therapy

What Is Emotion Focused Therapy?

Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT) is a form of therapy designed to address maladaptive emotions, such as chronic fear and shame. Emotion Focused Therapy utilises a range of techniques in a safe and genuine therapeutic environment. This allows the emotions to be activated, explored, expressed, and regulated. EFT cultivates emotional intelligence and, as a result, can nurture deeper and more meaningful relationships.

When can Emotion Focused Therapy be used?

EFT can be used effectively for couples and families who are in distress. Perhaps the couples or families are dealing with a sense of betrayal, anger, distrust or fear. Although emotion focused therapy works particularly well when dealing with relationships, it has also proven effective when used with individuals dealing with depression or trauma.

How is Emotion Focused Therapy used?

The therapist will encourage the client to look at their current emotional issues and encourage them to explore feelings and emotions that they may not realise they have. Then the therapist will work with the client to help them use these emotions to connect with family members, friends, partners or spouses in a positive way, at the same time learning to respond to others’ emotional needs.

The first stage of EFT is to de-escalate the acute problems within the couple or family and break the negative cycles in the relationship. The second stage is a restructuring of the relationship, learning to use new language that is positive and connects with the other person/people rather than create rifts and division. Consolidating these habits is the third stage, where the therapist will help the client/s continue with this pattern of behaviour.
